       Fred Seraphin, Florida's first Haitian-American Judge, visited the Carrollton High School community on
       February 27th. He discussed how his origins and life experiences inspired him to  become the person he is
       today.
       Judge Seraphin shared his. personal experience with mistaken identity and racial profiling when he was
       incorrectly arrested his senior year o f college.


       In 200., his perseverance and dedication paid o ff when1he was appointed a judge by Governor Bush.
       Judge Seraphin closed his talk with the inspirational words, "You can make yourself whatever you want to
       be.” He is a living example o f this.

                              Judge Seraphin's visit was arranged by Christine Estlme, President and founder o f the Afro Club, Following
                              the Jucge's talk to the community, the Afro Club sponsored a soul food luncheon with the proceeds going
                              to Mary's Meals which is a non-profit organization providing daily meals to impoverished children in places o f
                              education worldwide:. The Afro Club also sponsored a visit by renown Haitian author,: Edwidge Danticat,

                              Afro Club members are: Christine Estime (President), Cachay Byrd (Vice President),, and Secretaries Cordelia
                              Jane Ingram Noel and Megan Poliak.

                                                                     Twenty-two high school students from Carrollton,
                                                                     along with students from Lourdes and Beler. schools,
                                                                     joined University o f Miami medical students and
                                                                     local physicians for a one-week mission trip to
                                                                     the Dominican Republic during Easter Break. The
                                                                     Carrollton group is lead by Amanda Clichy-Siiva ' 16
                                                                     who with the help o f Irene Labarte 117, Katie Dowel!-
                                                                     Esquivel' 17, and Emily Chavoustie117, whose father
                                                                     (Steven Chavoustie M.D), began the foundation and
                                                                     mission in 2 0 03 .

                                                                     The mission provides medical and public health care
                                                                     to underprivileged people living in rural villages
                                                                     throughout the Dominican Republic. High school
                                                                     students served as translators for the medical
                                                                     students and doctors treating patients, and had the
                                                                     opportunity to assist with basic medical procedures
                                                                     and examinations.
