What should I practise now?

         1    Always carrying out Repair when someone has been affected by a child’s actions. Ensuring this is

              a certainty so everyone knows their needs are taken seriously and there is not a permissive culture.

         2    Scheduling a specific time for Repair, following the school’s procedures. I use visual

              cues, like this picture on the right, especially when working with young children, to
              help them be clear on the purpose and expectations of the discussion.


         3    Making sure the child making amends knows s/he wasn’t ‘bad’ and instead knows the thing they


              found difficult / how their own needs were met wasn’t good for those around them and repair is

              important.

         4    Using ‘Chair Swap Perspectives’ (see toolkit) to help the child consider how it was for other

              people. If the child finds this hard, asking those involved to say how it was for them using the Speak

              Up 4 Better tool (I might ask those affected if they are able to do this face-to-face or a make a quick

              video clip – it only takes a minute - if they want to do this – if not, I speak on their behalf).

         5    Explaining that empathy is a skill if a child says they don’t care about causing harm – and also

              explaining that it is important we put something in place to help them improve the skill as it is a

              really important one – just like being able to swim, read or count.
