2 Responding in the Moment
The way an adult responds is crucial in helping a child get back on track.
It also has a powerful impact on a child’s relational safety, stress levels in their
body and their future self-concept.
▪ What the science teaches us about the best way to respond when
someone isn’t managing to keep to the expectations agreed.
▪ What to say and what not to say when things go wrong – think
paramedic: our job is to help the young person get back on track; now
isn’t the time to plan ways for things to be better next time (just as a
paramedic would not start discussing improvements to exercise and diet
with a patient).
▪ How to respond to help the person re-regulate so they can get on track
quickly. The approach provides a simple structure and script to help every person in
the school community respond in a consistent way.
▪ How to help someone get back on track in ways that are kind, yet also maintain
high expectations.
