3 Follow-up for Progress
Follow up is crucial if we want change. Without following up, we prevent
children from knowing how to improve. We will then always be mopping up.
▪ The importance of follow-up and how we can ensure young people
make ongoing progress and break out of unhelpful patterns.
▪ A clear structure for following up incidents using our method
known as ‘Coaching Conversations’. During a Coaching Conversation,
children are supported to better understand their own needs and those
of others; they are helped to work out how to manage better next time
in ways that are ‘Good for me, good for you, good for everyone’.
▪ A structure for making amends in a way that also supports the development of
empathic skills through a separate ‘Repair Time’ phase, providing a clear sequence
and script for supporting children to make amends for any harm done and repair and
build positive relationships. This element of the approach is vital in supporting the
growth of children’s social cognition and emotional intelligence.
