What does this unit teach us?
EVERY HUMAN HAS A SET OF NEEDS WHICH NEED TO BE MET FOR THEIR
BRAIN TO BE AT ITS BEST
▪ We all have needs: physical and sensory needs, emotional needs related to the people around us,
emotional needs related to tasks and events and cognitive needs.
▪ The Needs cards helps everyone to work out and talk about what might be up when we are
struggling: categorising needs into sets and breaking them down into different specific needs (as
we have in our Needs Card deck) gives everyone a shared language. It makes it easier for people
to work out what they need to feel good and do well. It also makes it easier for them to think
through what might be at play when they find things hard or things go wrong.
▪ We can summarise all of our physical and emotional needs as our ‘Big 5C Needs’: to feel
comfortable, to feel connected, to feel that I count, to feel capable and to feel a sense of control
over what is happening to and around me.
▪ By knowing our needs, we are in a better position to prepare to meet them well.
▪ Knowing our needs also means we have a better chance of noticing when they are not met well
and being able to do something about it early on.
▪ Being clear on our needs also means we can let others know and negotiate so that life is ‘Good for
me, good for you, good for everyone’.
