What does this all mean to our practice?
TO BE AT OUR BEST, OUR NEEDS MUST BE MET JUST RIGHT
1. We should teach children about the different types of needs (physical, sensory,
emotional – People Around me, emotional – The World Around Me, Learning Needs) and the
5C summary of these.
2. We should give children opportunities to learn their own unique set of needs and
recognize how big or small each one is at different times and in different places.
3. We should give children a chance to think about their needs AND the needs of
others
BEFORE they start a task so they can prepare ahead of time in ways that are ‘Good for me,
good for you, good for everyone’; (Prep4Best)
By teaching about needs, we help children to:
o Know their own needs so they can prepare ahead of time
o Consider the needs of others and become more emotionally intelligent and socially competent;
o Have the language (verbal, and using the cards, visual) to communicate their own needs
positively.
This is an important step in helping children to manage stressors positively and get on with
others.
