Page 36 - Strength Based Approach to Executive Function Skills DRAFT
P. 36
Why do some people find
Executive Function Skills hard?
4. Bad experiences:
Experiences which make a person feel scared or really
upset can stop Executive Function Skills from building
properly in their brain.
When young people spend too long
feeling worried or upset, it can
mean the stress chemicals in their
body become too high.
When stress chemicals are
high, the person can
become ‘vulnerable to
stress’.
This means that any extra
difficulty (even a small
one) can feel really big.
These high levels of stress also
stop brain pathways from building
so well.
Weak brain pathways then make
it even harder for the person to
manage.
