Page 32 - Strength Based Approach to Executive Function Skills DRAFT
P. 32
Why do some people find
Executive Function Skills hard?
1. A different Brain Map:
Not all brains are the same. Some people
simply have a brain that is wired and works
differently – they were born this way. Along
with particular strengths, they may experience
difficulties in some Executive Function Skills.
2. Not enough positive, enriching
experiences:
Some children have not had the experiences
we need to build strong brain circuitry. They
have not been given so much time to play,
talk and learn with adults and other children.
3. A lack of positive early attachments:
Feeling loved and cared for helps to build
brain circuitry. Some babies do not get the
close bond they need with an adult. This
stops their brain from building so well.
4. Bad (Adverse Childhood) Experiences
& trauma,
Some children are suffering from toxic stress.
Under stress, the brain shuts off areas of the
brain in charge of these important Executive
Function Skills.
