Emotional Regulation
Self-soothing
There will always be times when our needs cannot be met perfectly and
cortisol rises in our system. This is a normal part of life.
The trick is to help children be able to self-soothe quickly so they do not
let a rise in cortisol stop them from doing well in life or disrupting others.
Self-soothing allows us to bounce back quickly.
Self-soothing is a skill.
It is part of Emotional & Energy Regulation – one
of the Executive Function Skills.
Self-soothing also needs Flexible Thinking.
It is a special sort of flexibility called
‘Emotional Flexibility’.
