Responding in the
Moment Answers
1. The three key elements of Responding in the Moment are Calm,
Connect, Support.
2. If the adult cannot regulate and become calm, they should ask another
adult to deal with the situation. If there is nobody else available, they
should explain to the child that they need to take a few minutes to calm.
3. We should always connect with a child before helping them to get back on
track because connection releases oxytocin; oxytocin in turn blocks cortisol
and helps the person to regulate – it is the best way scientifically to help a
person to calm.
4. There are many benefits to connection: connection releases oxytocin, also
known as the trust drug. Oxytocin increases trust which improves
relationships; it blocks cortisol and supports the immune system. Oxytocin
even improves the building of neural circuitry.
