P. 61
11. In the longer-term, the approach aims to build skills for the future –
learning skills, pro-social skills, a moral compass and emotional
intelligence.
12. The key principles of the Empowerment Approach – understanding how
the brain is built and shaped; the impact that neural circuitry has on a
person’s ability to do well in the home, classroom and daily life; our
different types of needs; recognizing that when a person’s needs are met
well, they do well; understanding concerning or unhelpful behaviour as
unmet needs, missing skills and stress responses; recognizing the
importance of relational safety and staying curious – all of these principles
are as relevant to a newborn as they are to a 9 year old, 15 year old and
indeed a 90 year old!
The programme itself is primarily designed for ages 3 to 18. Many of the
models, tools and strategies are just as suitable when working with adults.
