Key Messages: Getting Brain Ready
We need to explicitly teach children what pro-social and pro-learning behaviours
sound and look like, rather than just assuming they know. 1
When we agree expectations with children rather than giving rules to children, we give
2 daily opportunities to think through what they AND others need to feel great and do
well. This builds self-awareness and the vital skills of flexibility and prosocial thinking.
Focusing on the purpose of expectations, and the natural consequences
of unhelpful words and actions, helps children to build pro-social thinking skills they 3
can use in other situations, now and in the future.
4 'Prep4Best' helps children to think through how they can be at their 'Brain Best',
rather than leaving it to chance. It gives them the best chance for success.
We should teach children the 'Prep4Best A, B, C': A: Predict, B: Prevent & C: Plan.
This structure will help them to start to Prep4Best more and more independently. 5
