Page 60 - Course 1 Shifting Mindset: What is the best approach for supporting children and why?
P. 60
We can use Shifting Mindset to help children get
Brain Fit by:
1. Reducing shame and blame for those that struggle by reframing
behaviour as unmet needs and missing skills (rather than ‘naughty’).
This protects the sense of self for those children who struggle. Rather than seeing
themselves as naughty, they can start to recognise and build their unmet needs and
missing skills.
1. Helping all children understand the ‘why’ behind behaviour.
Creating a culture of ‘Curious not furious’ about behaviour helps everyone gain a
better understanding about why some people struggle. Through this, communities
become less nervous of people who are struggling; they become more empathic
and solution-focused. Their understanding of ‘the why’ means they are in a better
position to help.
