280 Deception at Work
You should also remember that the suspect is probably thinking about two immediate
concerns. The first is his wrongdoing and the second having to tell his family and pals that he
has admitted to it. Often the second it more important than the first.
Example : ‘It takes real courage to admit we have done something wrong … but people will
think better of you if you help.’
OFFER THE SUSPECT YOUR ASSISTANCE
Offer the suspect your assistance. Tell him you are independent and, like a doctor, used to
hearing about people’s problems and that you have seen it all before. Suggest that you can
solve the problem by working together.
Example : ‘There are things we all would have done differently, and until you are in that
position, you never know how you will react. I can understand why this happened. Now can
we clear it up?’
ASK WHAT IS HOLDING HIM BACK FROM TELLING THE TRUTH
Ask the suspect what is holding back his admitting the truth. Establish what his fear is. Down-
play the motives for the crime, suggesting that it may have started off as borrowing or as a
practical joke.
Example : ‘You are a sensible bloke, you know this is all going to come out. What is holding
you back from getting this sorted out now?’
Also point out that it does not matter to you whether he tells the whole truth or not. Explain
the resolution plan, how evidence will be obtained and that his refusal to accept reality may
force the company to take legal action.4
NOTHING TO LOSE
If the suspect has admitted to minor violations (or they can be proven), you may suggest:
Example : ‘Geoff, you know that if the company wants to throw the book at you for [the minor
offence] they can. If we can help them sort out this [more serious matter] I am sure that will
influence any decisions they take. You know you have nothing to lose by getting all this out of
the way, don’t you?’
THE LIMITED WINDOW
Emphasize that the suspect does not have unlimited time.
4 But don’t make threats or promises you cannot keep
