Absorption process:
The transfer of digested food to blood / lymph through the cells lining ileum (villi) in
the small intestine.
The inner epithelial lining of ileum if folded to form “villi”.
The inner surface area of small intestine is 10 m2 (5times as much as the surface area of
the body) as villi increase the surface area of the small intestine to absorb the food.
Structure of villus
Epithelial layer:
Encloses a lacteal (lymphatic) vessel is surrounded by network of
venous & arterial blood capillaries.
Micro-villi:
V. tiny projections from the epithelial layers & increase the surface area of
absorption.
