1-Water waves are transverse wave?
Because the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of wave
propagation.
2-Sound waves are longitudinal wave?
Longitudinal: Because the particles of the medium vibrate in the same direction of
wave propagation
Real life application:
Physiotherapy tubs (Jacuzzi): It is a tub where water
moves in the form of circular waves.
Hot Jacuzzi: It is used to treat sprains and cramps
Cold Jacuzzi: It is used to treat nervous tension
B)According to the ability to propagate and transfer energy:
Mechanical waves Electromagnetic waves
-They need medium to propagate. -They don’t need medium to propagate.
-Their speed is relatively low. -They can propagate in space.
-Some are transverse and others are -Their speed is great.
longitudinal waves. -All are transverse waves
Ex: water waves – sound waves Ex: Radio waves and light waves
Note:
1- BOTH MECHANICAL AND ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES PROPAGATE IN
DIFFERENT MATERIALISTIC MEDIA WITH DIFFERENT VELOCITIES.
2-THE VELOCITY OF MECHANICAL WAVES MUCH SLOWER THAN THAT OF
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES.
3-ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES CHARACTERIZED BY PROPAGATION IN SPACE
WITH VELOCITY 3X108 M/S
