And it isn%u2019t just because the chimps scream all day that the monkey and bird house has earned that name either.%u201c The conditions in the house are horrendous,%u201d says the 23-year-old who recently graduated with a degree in animal behavior. %u201c I don%u2019t know what the city%u2019s priorities are. That house is probably the most popular one in the zoo.%u201dThen, she enumerated a long list of house problems: the ventilation system bareiy works, windows are broken, doors on cages don%u2019t work properly. She points to the monkey cages outside the house. %u201c I had to use dead sticks to make the exhibits. If the city had the money, I could make natural exhibits.%u201dSandy%u2019s theory about the people who come to the zoo %u201cillegally%u201d %u2014those whobreak zoo regulations by barbecuing on the grass and entering the zoo after hours%u2014is that there really isn%u2019t anything in the 150-animal facility really worth staying within the law for. %u201c If you want to attract people, you have to have something attractive. That%u2019s not really something we%u2019ve got here at the Prospect Park Zoo,%u201d she says ruefully.It is a lovely Sunday afternoon at the zoo, hot and sunny, and the crowds are out in full force. They are enjoying the animals and the exhibits%u2014and they are also enjoying the supposedly %u201c prohibited\grassy spots, both for iounging and barbecuing. There were once signs requesting people to stay off the grass and to use the numerous walkways, according to zoo workers, but those signs are gone.
