To the people who remember the jingle, please accept my heartfelt condolences and to those of you who don%u2019t, consider yourself lucky.Since my daughter started school, I have the same dream every August. I%u2019m outside one of the private schools of Brooklyn Heights with my wife (who looks especially radiant because she is with child) and my seven year old daughter. All of a sudden, Joe DiMaggio appears with a camera crew. He starts talking and the camera switches to mv Drettv daughter. %u201cIt will cost thirty thousand dollars to send this young girl through nursery and elementary school.\The camera then turns to my wife and Joe says, %u201cBy the time this expected child is ready to go to school, it will cost lorty thousand dollars to send her through school.%u201d Before I realized it, Joe had pushed me on the ground and is on top of me with a piece of equipment found yj optometrists%u2019 offices. Joe says, %u201cZoom in on his eye, Harry. By the time the gleam in this man%u2019s eye is ready to go to school, it will cost fifty thousand dollars to go throughschool.%u201dThen I wake up and according to my wife I say, %u201cThirty, forty, fifty,%u201d my eye twitches and I go back to sleep. So much for dreams.Nursery school is the first step. Most nursery schools will not accept a four year old child for a full day program unless the child has gone to school in a half day program as a three year old. So if mcm wants to go back to work, junior better start school at three. It is also better for the child to start school in a half day programrather than a 9 a.m.-3 p.m. or a 9 a.m.-6 p.m. program. A great many of the children of the Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights area are hardened veterans of a year at school by the age of four which puts this affluent area of Brooklyn ahead of Head Start but slightly behind the Red Chinese.'Alt is harder to get in to nurseryschool than a private elementary school. You should have your plans set by the end of February for the following September. There is always a chance for a late cancella-j tion, therefore, it is always a good idea to have your name put on a waiting list. The first parent-teachers meeting can be quite traumatic. At our first meeting, my daughter%u2019s teacher told us our daughter lacked coordination and that we should have it checked out. Right away my wife and I thought of allthe muscular diseases. We took our daughter to the park and after missing two thrown balls, she caught the third which put her one up on most of the Mets. Another parent, at another school, was told that her son didn%u2019t get along with other children. After inviting a different child over to the house every day fof.a week, she threw inB y the time this child is readyto go to school, it will costforty thousand dollars to sendher through school.the towel. %u201cEither he%u2019s cured or he%u2019ll have to go through life without any friends, because I can%u2019t take it anymore.%u201d You have to weigh the teacher%u2019s words against what you see in your own child and any conversations you might have with other parents. Some private elementary and nursery schools are continually juggling their student body. Suppose there is a surplus of five year olds at your child%u2019s school and your child just so happens to be five years old. All the fives can%u2019t be in the same class; some are going to have to be in a class with four year olds. The teacher tells you, your child can%u2019t read well enough, he can%u2019t stick to one project or he doesn%u2019t socialize as much as he should. With a group of four year olds he could gain confidence and be a leader. You have just come from work. You%u2019re tired and irritable. What do you do?In most cases, both you and your wife have gone to college. You have both been Spocked, Piageted and Freuded. You are better educated and more observant than your parents. Ninetynine times out of a hundred if your child is having a real severe problem you would be aware of it. If he is having such a problem, is being with the four year olds the answer? Another big question is,would your child still have this problem, if there wasn%u2019t a surplus of five year olds? The teacher%u2019s allegiance is with the school first and with your child second. There are just as many reasons, if not more, why your child should be with the five year olds. He could regress being with four year olds, if he is having a particular problem, the five year olds could help him whereas the fours couldn%u2019t. Children at five know the difference between going on to a new class with their friends and staying behind in their old class, etc.If you%u2019re interested in having your child go to Catholic School and the school has a kindergarten like St. Charles, you should enroll your child in the kindergarten because there will be very few spaces available at the first grade level. P.S. 8 is the best public school in the district, so if you want to give it a try, go ahead. You can switch your child to a private school after the fall term has started if necessary. What do I recommend? I recommend that you visit all the schools you%u2019re interested in, sit in on a class if possible and talk to the parents who already have children at the school.City _ P h o n eIVIrtlL I UUMTIX * September 7, 107ftFounded 1897Brooklyn Conservatoryof MusicRegister Now for Fall SemesterPiano, Voice, A ii Orchestral Instruments,Recorder, Guitar, Theory, Sight-singing,Harmony, Dictation, Counterpoint, JazzWorkshop, Jazz BandFREE MUSIC APTITUDE TESTCHILDREN, ADULTSBEGINNERS, ADVANCEDChartered by N.Y.S.
