On top of driving them to the point oftotal exhaustion, many are doing permanent damage totheir feet.To help these pavement pounders in pursuit ofhealth, the Podiatry Society of New York has issuedthe following pointers for those who exercise expresslyvia their own steam:First, take a good look at your feet. Bare ih mind thatthey are precious moving pedestals, and will take youan average of 65,000 miles in your lifetime. Be kind tothem.Never run barefoot. Wear the proper shoes whichcushion and support your feet. Make sure there is roomto wiggle your toes. Throw away old work shoes.W ear absorbant cotton sweat socks that fitcomfortably. In addition to preventing friction, theyhelp to avoid a rash.Keep your toe nails trimmed straight across. Thepurpose of the nail is to protect the toe - it shouldn%u2019tcover or be shorter than your toe itself.To avoid muscle spasms and excess fatigue, dostretch and warm up exercises before running.In case of injury, first aid calls for immediate coolpacks. Get professional help if swelling or paincontinues.Corns or calluses are indications of excess pressure.Again, get professional help if necessary.And most of all, be kind to your body.
