N V 11201The South Brooklyn Mental Health Program is presently coordinating two senior citizens centers in Carroll Gardens. One on Friday afternoons at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church; the other meets every Tuesday at the South Congregational Church. These groups are seen in the light of primary preventive, psychiatric care, providing a setting in which senior citizens can Interact and draw emotional support. These centers invite senior citizens out of their homes to meet new friends and engage in activities of interest to them. In such a setting, advocacy services can easily be provided, making the difficulties of growing old easier. The Carroll Gardens community is predominantly Italian with three generations living together or in close proximity. Although the families tend to be closely knit, a study of the area performed by the Congress of Italian-American Organization disclosed that little consideration or involvement in the family actually existed for the grandparents.Scanning this community, South Brooklyn Mental Health Program was able to get many positive responses from individuals and organizations, such as the Congress of Italian-American Organizations, local churches, and the Local Longshoreman%u2019s Union for Initiating a senior citizens group. The group at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, at Court and Luquer St., had been operating since August of 1972. The program has grown to over forty members who now plan and design their own activities with the help and 'erdership of the South BrnnklvnActivities range from lunch to sewing to a frien dly card game.Mental Health Program. Their activities have included day trips, a weekly business meeting, parties, games, arts & crafts, creative movement groups, movies, discussions and guest speakers. An elected advisory group meets every week to plan upcoming activities. They are presently planning more guest speakers, trips for the spring and summer, and a St. Paddy%u2019s Day party. This group will be constantly open to new members both male and female. The trroun at SouthPastor N e v ille N .. Like the other group, seniors will be encouraged to develope and design their own programs. A lunch program is projected for the group which will meet every Tuesday at the Church, located at President and Court Streets, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ping-pong and billiards will be available to this group in addition to the activities being held at St. Mary%u2019s group. Unlike the St. M ary%u2019s group, the South Congregational Senior Citizens Center is seen as time limited. The center will be moved to the permanent senior citizens center being sponsored by the international Longshoreman%u2019s Union directly across from Carroll Park on Court St. It is expected to open in about a year following renovations. However, the Church is attempting to offer what facilities and services are available to those seniors who will benefit from the permanent center. The South Brooklyn Mental Health Program is attempting to cooperate in whatever way possible in order to provide better and wider services to a population in our society whose neglect has only recently been realized. The Carroll-Gardens community through cooperation, has begun to offer to their senior citizens a life of their own as their families become more mobile and dispersed.
