The delicately elongatedritual irons, reminiscent ofEtruscan bronzes, are forged by aDogon smith who is believed tohave descended directly from hisremote ancestor who leaded thesecret of ironmaking from thegods. A ritual mask is perceived asa moving sculpture.-Placed in thecontext of Dogon belief, thesesculptures take on their truerelevance and significance. To display the works of theDogon in their natural context, TheBrooklyn Museum has created anenvironment from the photographsand films of Eliot Elisofon whosestunning documentary on Africamade television history. Explanatory texts, costumes, andfilms of Dogon life and ritual serveto further broaden the scope of theexhibition.Unlike most collectors of Africanart, Lester Wunderman hasacquired a first hand knowledge ofthe Dogon people and their culture.President of a major advertisingfirm, Wunderman began hiscollection some 15 years ago andbecame so involved in the Dogonculture that he traveled to Africa todiscover at first hand the creatorsof the works he had so lovinglycollected. He has documented theDogon people in photographs andfilms which he is now processingfor educational use.A fully illustrated catalogueAfrican Art of the Dogon: TheMyths of the Cliff Dwellers by JeanLaude (published by Viking Press,in association with The BrooklynMuseum), available in soft coverfor $5.95, traces the history, techniques and significance of thisart. *D id n ' t f r C f r o t h i s x e a r ?iT H e n v i s i t 5 0 U V L A K J :i4 7 AXoWTtt&ug. bT,-fclut <9sJ* jfr& tidL -625-0883 open%u2019til 12p.m.A. (When you order this dish and some others, your waiter will ask whether you prefer it to be %u201c mild%u201d or \Don%u2019t be adventurous unless you are prepared to live with the result: spicy means hot here, and they aren't fooling).whole affair was cooked with lemon garnishes, and aside from being too boney for my taste, was a delicious treat.Dessert was an absolute delight and we are still talking about it days later %u2014 a dish described as cheesecake, but unlike any cheesecake you have ever tasted anywhere. It comes to the table straight from the oven, and bears some resemblance to a cheesefilled crepe, w ith sugar sprinkled on top. Don%u2019t miss this when you go.Talking to the chef about how he creates what he cooks isn't likely to get you anywhere. He guards his secrets well. As for his unusual combination of spices which produce a distinctive taste for his food: %u201c secret AtlanticSeafood recipe.\for his %u201c cheesecake%u201d recipe. Even the rice is a tasty departure from the saffron rice normally served elsewhere, and what is the secret: %u201c Atlantic Seafood special recipe,%u201d he says.We also sampled the Shrimp Fantasie, a delectable dish of succulent shrimp, which were sauted in wine sauce sauce and middle east spices. These were more delicately spiced than the Rago, and were a pleasant lead-in to the main dish of the evening. We had come to Atlantic Seafood Restaurant looking for fish and fish we were going to have, in spite of a menu filled with a variety of many other fine-sounding dishes on the menu. We put ourselves into the hands of our chef, and out of the oven popped a whole fish that had come from the Fulton Fish Market only that morning; scrod, I think. TheAli Abdo said that he is proudest of his veal dishes, and we voted to have a taste of one of them next time we go back.Atlantic Seafood International Restaurant is a comfortable place, with a newly modernized interior. I would recommend it to any friend, though I might not want to share my good fortune in discovery with my enemies, because one thing is for sure %u2014 the good prices won't last long once the place is discovered.
