LiijLj OVV A AClutching my letter from theParks Department and wonderingwhether anyone would ever know ifI just %u2022slipped into the HeightsCinema for a double feature instead, I went to the first day ofcompetition in the ScrabbleTournament at Cadman PlazaPark on March 18.About 120 other Brooklyniteswere seated on either side of twolong rows of tables; between eachpair of people was the fanciestScrabble set I had ever seen, theboard on a revolving base withindented squares so the letteredtiles wouldn%u2019t slide around. Twominute plastic timers, red and blueScrabble ballpoint pens, a velvetlike bag of 100 lettered woodentiles, score sheets, and racks tohold the letters completed eachpair%u2019s equipment. On the stage atthe front of the room were theParks Department rulemakers, armed with at least two dozenFunk and Wagnalls, eagerlyawaiting the first challenged word.A --- L olrv/>U fsCt n uig uumuci icoo oiuuu v/iito one side, its face turning fromred to white as its single handreached predetermined crucialtimes. The face turned white, andthe first of three 50-minute gameshad begun. My opponent, a student atBrooklyn Poly Prep, started withFEIGN. It had been yearssince I had played this game, butas a Sunday Times crosswordpuzzle regular, I thought at leastone of those obscure words frommy %u2019Crossword Puzzle Dictionarywould come to mind. My twominutes were almost up as Islipped some three-letter low-pointword into place. On and on wewent, his play thoughtful, mineverging on the panic-stricken. Ourfinal scores seemed not bad, until Ilooked at the huge board where allour names were listed and twoguys were busily posting numbersas high as 400 for the first game.%u201cAll players on the outside sideof the tables please rise and moveopponent looked harmless enough%u2014 a great-aunt type, wearing afloppy black hat and a once-stylishred suit, she shakily placed herfirst work and asked whether Iwould mind keeping both ourscores. The game was well under waywhen she apologetically hit mewith UNAU. a two-toed sloth.
