                                    Page 12 May 17/1973, PHOENIXLICH Methadone Program HelpsMore than BO per cent of the 620 heroin addicts who have continued as patients at three South Brooklyn Methadone Maintenance Treatment Programs operated by Long Island College Hospital during the past two years have been helped to overcome dependence on heroin, according to reports from the centers. The centers are part of the city-wide program funded by the N. Y. City Health Services Administration.Two of the program centers at 217 Court Street, and the third in Red Hook, report a majority of patients are either actively engaged in effective work, school or home situations, or able to control anti-social activities without dependence on heroin. Each patient receives a daily dosage of methadone under control of physicians and nurses. Less than three months later 37 of these patients were working and 8 were in school or on job training. Both centers report that 99 per cent of those on the program were in deep trouble before coming to the program either through arrests or in %u201canti-social life-styles-.%u201dThe Court Street centers report that %u201cover 100 of our 300 patients are employed full-time working in white collar service, professional positions, as construction workers, service station employees and in other jobs. Receiving treatment at Red Hook, 64 of the patients among 152 last enrolled were reported to be working, with 15 women returning to their families as homemakers.Methadone is used in the program to control the craving for heroin and to remove the %u201chigh%u201d brought on by its use. Each of the patients in the program has volunteered through the city%u2019s registration program. The process of changing a person's life-style is difficult and conditions for them in Red Hook make it more difficult. Yet 45 per cent of the clinic%u2019s population are constructively occupied.%u201dAcceptedcepted for admission at the Brooklyn Tech High School, he said. Carolyn Carr of Center Mall has been accepted at the High School of the Performing Arts and Michael Leonard of Columbia St. has been accepted at the John Dewey Experimental High School.
