It is open Tuesdays through Sundays, 1-9 p.m.Sculpture in plaster by Santo Matarazzo of Carroll Gardens has become a best seller, proprietor Lynne Gulkes notes. Matarazzo's cherubs and gargoyles, his gothic mirrors in fiberglass, fit into the local brownstone scene and his prices from $20. to about $40. are right as well.Lynne, a resident of Pacific St. for the past three years, opened Aspidistra last April with her partner Calvin Douglass, a teacher at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Bored with her job as manager of the junior dress departm ent of a Manhattan emporium, she decided to take over the vacant store and provide a crafts outlet for an area filled with creative hand workers. She was also looking for a place to include future projects achildren's gallery, a film screening set up. a women%u2019s meeting center.Ceramics combined with macrame by Beverly Martin of Park Slope, Pottery by Lythia Robinson of Brooklyn Heights, by Lily Schor, Myrna Sanders and Hinda Green of Cobble Hill is all on hand at Aspidistra along with candles by Jim Kleiber of Cobble Hill, children%u2019s clothes by Yura Mohr of Carroll Gardens, handm4loomed belts by Barbara Gibbons of Fort Greene, rugs by Diane McKinnon of Brooklyn Heights and p%u2019apier machie puppets by Susan Todd of the Slope.Plexiglass p la n te rs created by Calvin sell for $5. and are in great demand. Other hand wrought utilitarian articles include pillows by Patricia Rosner in calico print, children%u2019s knit and crocheted sweaters, lace edged halters at $3.75 and children's hand decorated work shirts.Photos by Martin Fisch mann and macrame hangings are on display atthe 331 Henry St. store, as are costume happenings by Bob Kushner of Soho. A found piece by Kushner called %u201c Evening in Paris,%u201d made of an old shawl which he dotted with acrylics and placed together with a stretch of lace, is strangely evocative.Referring to the latter arrangement, Lynne reveals her intent to continue the shop%u2019s aesthetic emphasis. %u201c Some people stop in and are disappointed in not finding a typical gift shop,\she reports, adding that the store would lose its reasonPHOENIX Photo by Francois DumaineVisitshops andstores in the Heights, Slope,Cobble Hill, and Carrol! It looks as though we will be forced to depend on local revenues for more and more of our essential services for some time to come. That%u2019s another reason I am worried about the huge mandatory costs in the future necessated by this year%u2019s budget. From this moment on, the City will be forced to work harder tomore effectively use the limited resources it has. If massive tax increases are to be avoided next year, means must be found now to realize substantial productivity increases in all agencies.During the coming months I shall concentrate my efforts on aFeas where large-scale improvements can be made.
