Another Gowanus HazardOpen flame and floating ash are the only things that blossom from this open space along the banks of the Gowanus Canal, on the property occupied by Northeastern Plastics Co. at 420 Carroll St. The scenes here took place one day in early February as winddriven flames spewed smoke and ash into the already heavily-pollutedatmosphere, driving the photographer from his vantage point at one time. The waste material is not burned here, not in an incinerator, but merely tossed into a large metal box or often just piled in heaps then set aflame. This burning, besides.being another symptom of the tragedy which unsupervised and d e t e r i o r a t i n g industrialization has wrought on the Canal area, is unlawful and a potentialhazard to neighbors and wanderers alike, witness the easy access to the area bythese two boys shown here.
