Seeing the Dance Theatre of Harlem perform was a %u201cnonesuch time%u201d for me.The Dance Theatre performed on a small stage at the Klitgord Center of New York City Community College on Feb. 10, to an audience that answered the Company%u2019s enthusiasm with a vitality of their own. One seemed to ignite the other. Before appearing for the small Brooklyn audience the group struggled with a brief, yet productive history. The company began with the visions of a man who recognized the need of bringing the classic ballet to the black community, along with the opportunity to train in the traditional art. And so, with this dream, Mr. Arthur Mitchell began what is now the Dance Theatre of Harlem.mmY!ISa MDIMSiB, M MORE!doors plywoodceiling fib shoefrock paneling mouldingsuspended ceiling materials paints and toolsMICL..DELIVERY ANYWHERE. The company has toured throughout Italy, Belgium, and Holland with great public success. It was with a triumphant return that they came to the Center on February 10, 1973.There were four ballets performed. Four acts of love, of beauty. In %u201cForces of rhythm, the music, both traditional and contemporary, brought an added dimension to a dance that could live totally on its own. The ballet was choreographed by Mr. Louis Johnson especially for the Dance Theatre of Harlem and captures the essence of ballet and ethnic dancing styles with an element of beauty showing the strong and binding relationships of the two.In %u201cRoots and Rhythm%u201d you see the muscles moving, embracing the music that the dancers bodies seem to almost magically generate by themselves. In %u201cDistress%u201d the audience was able to witness the trying out of the sisters for theirmen, for their lives, for their loves. And in %u201cShout,%u201d you see the abC* a! The dance brings the love of a man and woman to the watcher, it takes you into the forceful stream of love and attraction and one finds oneself flowing along with Gayle McKinney in her dilemma of choice. The entire company gives a fine performance, still, special attention should be given to the great movements of Virginia Johnson, Gayle McKinney, Derek Williams, Homer Bryant and Paul Russell. There was more, much more, in a dance that brought the history of the black people in America to the traditional ballet stage. It brings with it the love, the despair, the strength, and the fight. It brings tears and laughter. And it brings thought and a %u201cnonesuch time.%u201dParents Push New SchoolContinued from Page 8hearing on the question in the late60%u2019s.However, when the building did not go up, and the question, held over so long, was reintroduced and finally voted down by the new decentralized Community School Board, she was shocked at the lack of concern for the area%u2019s high school students. During November, 1971, determined to discover whether any support remained for the Gowanus school, she printed a petition and brought it to the P.S, 29 Puerto Rican Discovery Day luncheon. Within an hour 100 people had signed, and only three people were opposed.Soon afterwards she brought up the subject at a meeting of District 15 P.T.A. presidents. President Rosemary Merola, notified other district presidents of a meeting to consider the problem, Ellen Michener attended. The December meeting resulted in a move to begin a committee to consider ways of relieving the High School%u2019s burden. The committee%u2019s first get together wound up in the formation of a coalition, with Michener%u2019s appointment as Chairwoman. At that time the decision was made to push hard for a high school on the Gowanus; and so the new combination was named for its intent. As Michener recalls, the past year of meetings have brought no action. Current President of the P.S. 29 P. A., Jane Schoen, and Gowanus H.S. advocate, Helen Winship of Cobble Hill, agree that the pressure of the ballot would have to take over. The coming appearance of the community to speak for the school at the Board of Education meeting on Feb. 20, is the beginning implementation of this new strategy, she says.Michener, acting on her beliefs that %u201cdemocracy can%u2019t survive without an educated citizenry%u201d and %u201ccities can%u2019t survive without viable public school systems,%u201d hopes other parents and community residents will back the%u2019high school drive.CORRINE COLEMANSad School SagaContinued from Page 9students were counted in 1972 in the school built for 3334. At the time in late 1971, of Ellen Michener%u2019s renewed efforts, the John Jay P.T.A. was beginning to reattempt a solution of the school problem. The coalition is known as the Ad Hoc Committee for a Gowanus School, and is headed by Ellen Michener. Community leaders like Rev. George Voiland of St. Mary%u2019s Star of the Sea Church, have lately changed their minds and are now for the canal high school. They point to figures revealing overcrowding at four high schools to the south of North Kings; relief for which the 39th St. school is meant to provide. With Franklin D. Roosevelt H.S. over capacity by 1234, Lafayette H.S. by 1252, Ft. Hamilton by 1158, and John Dewey by 300, the 5444 extra students can fill North Kings and yet another school. When John Jay figures are added, the amount of students requiring high school accommodation totals close to 8000. With Bishop O%u2019Donnell and two other parochial high schools slated to close in June, and their buildings unavailable to the city, the situation promises to worsen.Alternative measures, like City As School, however admirable, cannot yet accommodate the great amount of students requiring high%u201e ----- 1 ----------TVT%u2019 aI $ %u00bb %u2022 %u00ab%u2022 a u i u u i o p a t c . r n u i I1CW JiUCcti S C IlO U lboard elections coming up this spring, it is likely that the high school question will be most prominent in District 15.PHOENIX ADS GET RESULTS
