It is in charge of Clay Johnson, who has been a cook for 36 years. However, the rumor that Mr. Johnson cooked the meals for George Washington%u2019s soldiers at Valley Forge is definitely not true. Nor did he leave his job at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to prepare our daily lunches.About 150 senior citizens come to the center every weekday for lunch and they are never disappointed. The meal always begins with soup. Then comes the entree or main dish, which is always served with two vegetables. At the end of the meal there is always some dessert. Of course there is coffee or tea, and white, rye, whole wheat, or pumpernickel bread with plenty of butter. And all these meals are served daily at no charge to the members. They are invariably delicious.Mrs. Miriam Smart, Mr. and Mrs. Jean Sutherland, James Gist, assist Mr. Johnson in serving the meals. Some m em bers who volunteer are Mrs. Amoroso, Mrs.Giordano, Mrs. Helen Ferguson and they also cut the butter that goes with the bread. In addition, they clean the tables after the members finish their meals. At about 2:30 in the afternoon, juice is served to those in the main room. A new service has been inaugurated. Members can buy coffee at ten cents a cup and cake at fifteen cents a slice in the Serving Room where Mrs. Sutherland, Mrs. Cora Rodgers and Mrs. Helen Tunstall are present to meet the demand. All the money is put aside for the benefit of the senior citizens who belong to this center.Eddie Smith, who had a stroke and was in the Long Island College Hospital, has been sent to the Five Towns Nursing Home in Woodm ere, Long Island.
