He was our chairman through the first two critical years. . . He has also been active with the Chamber of Commerce and, until recently, with CLICK, the organization developing the old Brooklyn Navy Yard for industry.%u201dGriswold was 1972 chairman of the United Fund of Greater New York, a member of the annual fund team of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn for three years, and chairman of a business committee organized to support development of the Maimonides Medical Center. Chairman of the Brooklyn Utilities Division of the United Hospital Fundfor six years, he was chairman of the Fund%u2019s Brooklyn campaign in 1963 and 1964.Looking back on the achievements he helped bring about in getting the downtown Brooklyn renewal underway in the 1960%u2019s and keeping it going in the %u20187Q%u2019s, Griswold modestly says, %u201c We were a bunch of average guys trying to do something that needed to be done. Out of such situations, great statesmanship is born.%u201dReflecting, Griswold says that %u201c Brooklyn has a lot of vitality and plenty of traditions. W ith the energyshortage, we are already seeing the move back to the cities, and Brooklyn is going to benefit from this tendency.%u201dThe Brooklyn Union Gas Company has been one of the few leading businesses to offer major support and encouragement to brownstoning in Brooklyn, and Griswold takes a typically modest approach to the major commitment his firm has made in pushing residential redevelopment in the neighborhoods around downtown. %u201c It would have happened anyw ay,%u201d he says, but allows that %u201c we probably helped accelerate and enlarge it.%u201dHow do the renewal of commercial and residential blocks in the downtown area relate? He says they %u201c encourage and draw inspiration from one another. Consciously, we felt if we began redevelopment in downtown, it would have a major effect on the adjoining neighborhoods. It is easy to attach great foresight to the process, but looking back now, we can see that subconsciously, the brownstone movement was already well underway.%u201dThe staff of the OTB office around the comerfrom you is so friendly that they give their winners alittle extra. Not in winnings, of course.
