Pate 18 PHOENIX January 10,1974! \\ 6 p O ni L. x! rsilU l l L i y i l l l l i y UMIt?IIIIIIUContinued from Page 3who is an officer of the Seventh Avenue Merchants%u2019 Association, supported the installation of sodium lights on commercial streets like Seventh Avenue, but not for side streets which are primarily residential.Kevin Brooks, President of the United Block Associations of Park Slope reported that he was surprised to see the replacement prbgram progressing so soon, but said that the program came as no surprise to the UBA. %u201cWe were well aware that the program was already funded and would get underway,%u201d Brooks said, adding that the UBA has not taken any official position on the installation of the new-lamps. %u201cI haven%u2019t gotten too many complaints,%u201d hereported, %u201cBut if there are complaints, we%u2019ll be glad to look into it. We%u2019re particularly anxious to verify the reports that the lamps cause damage to trees.%u201d The only official complaint received by the UBA thus far was from the Seventh Street Association, on whose block the new lamps were installed last week. The situation in Brooklyn Heights is somewhat different. There, on the basis of a poll taken last Spring and pressure from Councilman Richmond%u2019s office, 200W sodium lamps were installed on Clinton, Henry, Hicks, and Montague Streets last spring. The Brooklyn Heights Association has been on top of the sodium lamp installation program from the start. The BHA polled its memberslast May and found that a majority favored the installation of the lamps, particularly on main thoroughfares. When the lights were installed in the summer, many members reported second thoughts on the matter. In response to the number of unresolved questions, the BHA set up a committee-of-one, manned by George Silver, to investigate the matter. When Mr. Silver was contacted this week, he reported that as far as he can tell, Mr. Burell%u2019s statement that the, sodium lights will go everywhere does not exclude those streets in Brooklyn Heights not yet affected. According to his information, 150W lamps are to be installed on the less-traveled streets, asdistinguished from the 200W lamps already in service on Hicks, Henry, Clinton, and Montague, or the 4Q0W lamps in use on main thoroughfares such as Flatbush Avenue.Mr. Silver emphasized that neither he nor the BHA were antilighting, but felt that reports of damage to trees, as well as other matters, should be thoroughly investigated. He cited in particular a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that demonstrated under test conditions .that sodium lights do keep trees m a state of growth, not allowing them their natural dormant period. Commenting on Sheldon Goldberg%u2019s observation that trees along Henry Street did not lose their leaves this year because of the lights, Silver confirmed that this seemed to bethe case. He added that not only have the leaves remained, but they were still green up until the first ice storm two weeks ago. %u201cWe don%u2019t yet know what the lasting effect on these trees will be. We plan to check on their health in the Spring,%u201d said Silver.Mr. Silver further suggested that if residents wished to hear more about the current status of the streetlighting program and his investigations, there will be an open meeting sponsored by the BHA on Saturday, January 12th at Plymouth Church on Orange and Hicks Streets at 2PM. Various other matters of interest will be discussed at the meeting, but he said he will make a brief report, and stressed that everyone is welcome to attend.BUY SELL SWAP T R A D E G ET RESULTSPHOENIX C lassified AdsReach Thousands, Call 643-1032 to Place Your Ad.
