January 10,1974 PHOENIX Page 13Charges Energy Crisis IsBiggest Rip-Off' in HistoryMessage from theWindow on MontagueBY BERNARD ATKINSYou%u2019re all a bunch of suckers, and apathetic ones at that. I swear, I really don%u2019t believe you%u2019re Americans. You used to be brave, free and independent but not any longer. The only time you showed any anger was when your meat supply was threatened. People die, you%u2019re taxed to death, prices rise out of sight on everything you need to live and ail you do is sit and take it. Damn it, you should be ashamed of yourselves. The biggest rip-off, the greatest shafting in history is taking place and you%u2019re too dumb to yell. There is no energy shortage. This article is taken fromthe famous window of WeirFlorists on Montague Streetwhere owner BernardAtkins \occasion. We thought thiswindow piece particularlymerited publication here toreach a wider audience. There is no lack of oil. There is more oil in the ground and in storage than can be burned in a hundred years. This doesn%u2019t mean we should be profligate with it but the crooks in the oil business and their partners in crime are giving you the business%u2014from both ends.A friend of mine is the friend of a captain of an oil tanker. Just a week ago he sailed into Port Everglades in Florida with a full load of Venezuelan crude and was told to take it to Galveston to off load inasmuch as they were full up. Arriving at Galveston he was ordered to take it to the Virgin Islands. They told him he%u2019d have to wait; he may still be there waiting. All the storage tanks are full. Everything is full.Just think, if you wanted to double and triple the price of oil and gasoline, if you wanted to stop the ecologists and their demand for clean air, etc., if you wanted to get the right to build the Alaskan pipeline, if you wanted to eliminate the Japanese and the British andSenator BellamyInvites CitizensTo S peak O utThe following letter has been sent to us for publication on our Community Forum page:Dear Community Leader:Help me represent you more effectively. Y.W.C.A., 30 Third Ave., 2-5 p.m.others as world market competitors, if you wanted to boost the value of the dollar, all in one swell foop, what would you do? I'll tell you. You%u2019d get the Arabs who own the countries where you own the oil wells to cut their deliveries. You%u2019d deliberately cut down on the oil refining capacities of this country. You%u2019d create, deliberately, the greatest fuel crisis in history. That%u2019s what you'd do.In 1928 the Rockefellers and the messers Morgan and Mellon and the other crooks manipulated the stock market by dumping millions of shares of stock on the market in order to depress the prices so they could buy back at these low prices and wipe out the little guys. Itworked, but got out of hand and a world wide depression resulted with all the horror and resultant suffering. Morgan and Mellon et al didn't suffer. Now the oil people with the help of our congress and the executive branch are repeating history. They are causing tremendous dislocations in our economy. They are creating unemployment, inflation and soon a major depression. The government knew about the need to increase our refining capacity and did nothing. And to compound the felony they are permitting the oil companies to keep oil off the market until the prices double. Wait till gas gets to a dollar a gallon and then see the flood t at hits the market. If you%u2019re out of a job%u2014it's nothard luck. It's you know who. If you're barely making ends meet%u2014it's the fault of you know who. If our country goes down the drain%u2014it%u2019s the fault of you know who. Y-O-U! Keep on being quiet. Be a chicken%u2014or a sheep.Which reminds me of the story of the Shan, head of a rich oil kingdom, who was given to having epileptic seizures. The man who was appointed to stay on duty during the night to help the Shan if he had a seizure sneaked off to visit with his girlfriend. As luck would have it the Shan had a seizure and died The delinquent man was brought to trial and whether he lived or died depended upon his answer to one question. %u201c Where were you when the fit hit the Shan7%u201d Where will you be?Con Ed Says Use DownCon Edison reported last week that its customers in New York City and Westchester rang out the old year by continuing to conserve energy. In its fifth weekly %u201c Energy Boxscore,%u201d Con Edison reported that preliminary figures for the week ending Sunday, December 30, 1973, as compared to the actual figures for the corresponding week in 1972 %u2014 both adjusted for differences in the weather %u2014 indicated the sendout was down as follows: Electricity 7.8 percent; natural gas 4.8 percent, and steam 8.5 percent.Usually, \in December would be 4 percent in electric, 8 percent in natural gas, and 3 percent in steam.During the week ending December 20, 1973, Con Edison customers conserved the equivalent of142.000 barrels of oil.
