January 10,1974 PHOENIX Page 9Vandals RemoveGlass Globes atGrand Army PlazaBY JOHN BLACKMOREObservant readers may have noticed the disappearance three months ago of the spherical globes which graced the cast iron lampposts encircling the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial at Grand Army Plaza. These globes disappeared so quickly that many of us thought they had been removed as a part of some official directive. However, as it turns out, it was indeed the work of vandals. To assure you that something is being done about this situation, and to once again underscore the importance of private citizens taking a responsibility for our parklands, we have reproduced the correspondence between Stan Mongin of Park Place and Donald Simon, the Curator of Prospect Park.We might add that Mr. Simon has been particularly responsive to community needs and demands in the past, but as always, we will reserve our laudations until action is taken.QQO.Hear AboutLocal Park1 %u2022>ProblemsLights blaze at monument at Grand Army Plaza these dayswithout globes, which vandals haye removed.Donald Simon Curator, Prospect ParkSubject: Globes on Lamps at Grand Army Plaza MonumentDear Mr. Simon:The glass globes formerly adorning the tops of the cast iron lamps surrounding the monument at Grand Army Plaza are missing. Since they all seemed to disappear simultaneously months ago, I assume the PRCA, rather than vandals, is responsible. What is the problem that has caused months to pass without replacement? I trust that you will make sure this small matter is corrected so that one of the City's newest Landmarks can look its part and in turn help re-make Flatbush Avenue into %u2018%u2018the Gateway to Brooklyn.\Yours truly,Ave. ImprovementStan Mongin Steering Committee Triangle Parks-Flatbush CommitteeMr. Stan Mongin Steering CommitteeDear Mr. Mongin:I too have been concerned about the absence of the globes at Grand Army Plaza. They were not removed by PRCA, but are missing due to the diligence of vandals.I have asked the'Bureau of Gas and Electricity of the Department of Public Works, which has responsibility for the maintenance of street and decorative lights, to restore the globes as soon as possible and to insure that replacements are provided as needed. As soon as I have some word about the situation, I will let you know. I am taking the liberty of sending a copy ot your letter to tne bureau ot Gas and Electricity in support of the requests already made by PRCA.With best wishes and thanks for your support.Sincerely.Donald E.
