Brooklyn) urged the City Council Consumer Affairs Committee to approve his bill requiring prepackaged fresh produce be wrapped in colorless and transparent wrapping. Richmond in prepared testimony before the Council Committee, said %u2018%u2018the measure would go a long way toward eliminating consumer fraud and confusion.%u201dAccording to Richmond, %u201c Consumers are easy prey for unscrupulous fruit and vegetable dealers who pawrl off everything from tainted tomatoes to spoiled strawberries to moldy mushrooms by placing these items at the bottom of solid packages.%u201dThis bill is a direct result of suggestions made by members of the Councilmanic Advisory Committee Consumer Task Force which has been monitoring supermarket food price trends in Brooklyn Fleights and Greenpoint for the past nine months. The Task Force noted that fresh vegetables and fruits often were hidden from view by cardboard or colored wrapping, and that shoppers should be entitled to see what they are purchasing.Assemblyman Michael L. Miss Reid, a 75-year old invalid, is a former tenant of two buildings owned by Methodist Hospital that have since been demolished. She was shuttled back and forth in the past two years as the hospital continued its demolition program. Unlike other tenants, she was not given a generous settlement for relocation. Instead, she found herself at the hospital%u2019s mercy. She was housed most recently at the hospital%u2019s Nurses Residence, and received notice last January that she had to vacate those premises as well.A number of Park Slope groups, including the Park Slope Civic Council and the Methodist HospitalCommitee on Ambulatory Care, came to her aid, publicizing her plight and the history of the hospital%u2019s actions towards her. The findings of the Hospital Expansion Committee of the Park Slope Civic Council were reported by The PHOENIX last March 7th. As a result of the community%u2019s concern, the hospital has finally acted and Miss Reid is now happily settled in her new Park Slope apartment. The hospital has agreed to a small subsidy towards her rent. They will also cover a percentage of any rent increases she might incur. Dick Coyne, Chairman of the Expansion Committee, said that he was surprised and pleased at the happy resoltuion of Miss Reid%u2019s plight. He reported that the building in which she now lives %u201c is one of the nicest in the Slope.%u201dBellamyDAY OK N IG H T HOOK TO IX )O K SERVICEH eights Car & Limousine Service Incl.iK 'til and l.nriL%u2022 Distance CallsZ o n e Flat RatesO PEN 24 H O I KS TE L. r>22-7222d if f l IT M N D E U M U mSENSITIVE PORTRAYAL OF CHILDREN THROUGHPHOTOGRAPHY643*9654 j--------m,reCT %u2122 ( F?ooer3chillizz.i of ALL'SECURITYu iM i \\ ___\\ COCK SMITH 5 iSn U I A t S I I U I I I w i m ^ocHioCt u p c 3 l l J r * * %u2019-a Free Security^ M t %u00a7 S 'One year Guarantee on our Service24 Hour Emergency Service- Segal. The rent would be reduced if the board found it to exceed the prevailing rent for comparable apartments, but the tenant would be required to pay the landlord%u2019s legal costs if the appeal were rejected.\Finney said, %u201c of Nixon's %u2019Phase 11 rent guidelines%u2019, which were completely unenforceable and gave tenants no protection.\are given no idea of the actual limits, if any, that would be placed on rent increases,\asserted. %u201c And no tenants could afford to use this procedure, because they would risk getting stuck with leases they couldn%u2019t afford, and the landlord%u2019s legal costs, too. This is outrageous.\On April 29, Democrats in the State Legislature unveiled a comprehensive energy program for New York State, much of it patterned after national legislation authored by Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D-Wash). State Senator Carol Bellamy was among the sponsors of the measure, accompanied by a resolution urging President Nixon to roll back the prices of crude oil and petroleum products to averages prevailing in the Spring of 1973.CandidacyMaida Asofsky of Park Slope, long active in local Brooklyn civic and political affairs, has declared herself a candidate for DemocraticfMTW#T he PHOENIXC opies o f th e 40 p a g e S p e c ia lD ow n tow n B r o o k ly n issu eno-a*;.'.'J*3*r t - , %u2014Do*'*1ta/fl_ WjaWe w ill m a il a c o p y to y o u ,o r a fr ie n d , o r y o u r M oth er, o r ab u sin ess a sso c ia te , fo r 6 0 r p e r co p y .(50%u2018 at Phoenix office)r~-------- %u2014 ----| P le a se send a cop y of the A pril 2 0 J%u25a0 S p ecia l D ow ntow n issu e to:Enclosed is: $......I ____________ ___________ 2 . ^ __________________i iI s .I4.| My nam e4kjm u ica w-cfo _iiiii|lhe P H O E N IX ,l 55 Atlantic Brooklyn,N.Y.l 1201^May 9, 1974, PHOENIX, Page
