We never hear what Lindsay eats or drinks. %u201c ... forty-two men died at Attica because Nelson Rockefeller would not go to the prison and join in the negotiations.\prisons during riots and he turned his back on the beatings described above, and broke his promise of no reprisals. True, he didn%u2019t arm his police with dum-dum bullets as Rocky did.But Lindsay%u2019s prisons in some ways, at least according to Newfield%u2019s own stories, were worse than Attica. For example, in Attica we learn that prisoners only get a change of underwear once a week. But when Newfield and Congressman EdwardI. Koch visited one of Lindsay%u2019s prisons, they found a man who hadn%u2019t had a change of underwear in 6 months! Similarly, Newfield says that in Lindsay%u2019s prisons, the jail population is %u201clooked in [its] cells twenty-one hours a day%u201d but elsewhere he reports that %u201call summer the inmates of Attica have spent 15 and Vz hours of every day locked in their cells.%u201d Sounds like paradise compared to Lindsay%u2019s prisons! And we never learn whether or or not Lindsay eats steak. The final example I will give of Newfield%u2019s unevenhandedness, and one which demonstrates that one rhetorician is a sucker for another, appears in the book%u2019s final pages. Newfield describesJohn Lindsay%u2019s stirring speech to the Bar Association in 1968, %u201cone of the best speeches of his career, a speech that ended with a summons- to the legal profession to abolish the marshal system.%u201d Lindsay even quoted Edmund Burke. And then, Newfield points out, \honorably refused to appoint a single new marshal. %u201cBut,%u201d writes Newfield, without any explanation of what pressures may have changed Lindsay%u2019s mind, %u201cin April of 1971, Lindsay suddenly abandoned his opposition to the marshals, and since then he has appointed, or reappointed, fifty-one of them.%u201d Yet Newfield claims that %u201cLindsay%u2019s good intentions, however, deserve some acknowledgement. Incontrast, former Mayor Robert Wagner appointed twelve marshals on his last day in office in 1965.%u201d Well, I say, at least Wagner could be credited with sparing us righteous rhetoric. In my book, a person is what he does, not what he says. In Jack%u2019s, people are whatever he wants them to be.There is a real question in my mind about why Jack Newfield had to look for %u201ca decent judge in a rotten system%u201d at all. Who influences Jack Newfield? Is it late night sessions in %u201cJimmy%u2019s\Aurelio, Mattie Troy, Jimmy Breslin or Pete Hamil (the self-appointed ethnic and folk heroes of New York politics)? I wonder what makes Jackie run. %u25a0Y&l %l / j ,%u00b0 O ' ' ^ T 7WRITERS%u2019 %u201c UNSALEABLE%u201d MANUSCRIPTSTry AUTHOR AID ASSOCIATED, Dept WSLS, 340 East 52nd St., N.Y.C. 10022.
