A woman should check with her doctor and the hospital where she will give birth to ascertain their policy.%u201dWomen should be entering their eighth month of pregnancy (7 months pregant) to attend the course. This course will be repeated beginning July 17. The Lamaze course includes both the philosophy and the exercises designed to make birth a pleasant experience. Small groups will learn the breathing technique, designed to minimize pain and the body exercises that tune the body for delivery.Fathers-to-be take an active part in the Lamaze course, learning to coach the woman and to aid in the counting for the breathing exercises plus learning how to time contractions. Husbands are encouraged to attend all six classes; however, if time is a problem, they are asked to attend at least classes 1, 5 and 6. Ideally, the husband should be allowed to remain with his wife in both the labor and delivery rooms. Permission for this must be obtained from the doctor and hospital involved. Even if this final phase of father-to-be participation is denied, the Lamaze method makes for a happier, easier birth.BY DAN ICOLARIDon%u2019t let the Austrian drapes fool you: Michel%u2019s inPark Slope is no longer the exclusive domain of charity luncheons and the Fraternal Order of the Well-Done Moose.
