Page 16, PHOENIX, May 30, 1974Rare Earth for Plants and AdviceBY DAN ICOLARI%u201c I think people appreciate the fact that this is very much a neighborhood shop,%u201d says Kathy Buchanan, %u2018 %u2018which means they can come by to talk as well as to buy.%u201d Which is probably one of the main reasons for the success of Kathy%u2019s RARE EARTH, a plant shop near the Pratt Institute campus in Clinton Hill. But you get the feeling Kathy would succeed at virtu a lly anything she tried, so why a plant store? %u2018%u2018Because I%u2019ve always love plants,%u201d and Kathy admits she%u2019s as surrounded by them in her Clinton Hill home as she is in her shop.Though she%u2019s lived in Clinton Hill with her husband and two children for the past 12 years, Kathy was never %u2018 %u2018ju s t%u201d a housewife. She worked as an airlines reservation agent and a social work supervisor before become a part-time employee at RARE EARTH and then its owner. Under her proprietorship, it has become a stable business with an everincreasing stock. The other day, when I stopped in at RARE EARTH to buy the spiral eucalyptus in the window (%u2018 %u2018just decorative - not for sale,%u201d said Kathy, but she promised to get me one), she was chatting excitedly with a customer who had finally gotten the knack of growing plants under her tutelage. %u2018%u2018And now she%u2019s ready to transplant things she bought months ago,%u201d said Kathy, proudly. %u2018 %u2018There%u2019s nothing mystical about helping plan*- survive. Before a customer leaves my shop, I make sure he or she knows what to do to make it thrive.%u201dKathy points out that as a neighborhood shop, RARE EARTH offers advice on cultivation and other problems. %u2018%u2018I don%u2019t have the kind of traffic that might make other stores forget the customer who bought a one-dollar plant. Anyway, I really like my customers. I can honestly say that most people who come into this shop are pleasant, easy-going and earthy; I%u2019ve never had a problem.%u201dAt RARE EARTH, there are plants for virtually every tasteand budget - huge hanging baskets, plant-lined shelves, an enormous bamboo plant that touches the ceiling. %u2018%u2018And if I don%u2019t have it, come hell or high water, I%u2019ll get it,%u201d says Kathy.She%u2019s especially proud of the fact her stock is a good bit cheaper than elsewhere. %u2018 T ve done comparison shopping in Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, and some of those prices are incredible,%u201d she says, shaking her head.As private citizen, Kathy Buchanan is active in SamBeard%u2019s congressional campaign and a firm believer in public education (our kids go to school together at P.S. 20). Of Clinton Hill, she says, %u2018%u2018I just love it here. We%u2019re a real melting pot within another.%u201dRARE EARTH is worth a trip from anywhere - for its stock, its prices, and for Kathy Buchanan%u2019s smile that goes on for days. 471 Myrtle Avenue between Washington Avenue and Hall street.
