Not only is this a greatincentive to use mass transit, but may be an idea worth trying forother off-hour times as well.But for right now, there%u2019s one refinement that is a must: that%u2019sthe elimination of the operation of the bus system and the subwaysystem as two entirely separate entities at least as far as fares go.There may be some administrative reason why the MetropolitanTransit Authority chooses to operate the buses and subways asthough there were no connection between the two, but to thefare-paying public transit is transit.We believe that a worthy goal to improving and increasing useof public transit would be to allow a free transfer from bus tosubway and vice versa. A minor first step would be to remove thedistinction between the half-fare tickets for bus and subway.Now, if you go by subway, you must return that way %u2014 no usingthe bus without paying an extra fare. This is wrong and should bechanged now.
