Winston Churchill%u2019s DaughterUnveils Statue At Poly DedicationBY HENRIETTA SHEF.WK%u201cWe shall never surrender%u201d said Sir Winston Churchill to the House of Commons in June 1940. These words are inscribed at the bottom of a Statue of Sir Winston Churchill presented by his daughter, Lady Mary Soames, to the Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School, in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn on October 8.The two-foot high statue in bronze of Sir Winston Churchill, standing with his hands on his hips, is a replica of a much larger statue sculpted by the same artist, Oscar Nemon, that stands in the Houses of Parliament in London. It is the gift of Richard M. Edelman who graduated from the Country Day School in 1948 who said at the presentation that Sir Winston Churchill had been a great inspiration to him at school. %u201cWhenever I hear him speak it lifts me up%u201d he said.%u201c Love and Liberty are what my father stood for and he was prepared to fight for it.%u201d I>ady Soames told the audience of students, parents, friends and Alumni of Poly Prep. %u201cThey were as relevant then, as they are today and will always be and I hope that when you look at this statue you will remember what he stood for.%u201dSir Winston Churchill%u2019s mother, Jennie Jerome, was born in Brooklyn in 1854, the year the Country Day School was founded. She married Lord Randolph Churchill and their first son, Winston, was born in 1874, who later became the first Lord of the Admiralty in England in World War I and Prime Minister seven months after the outbreak of World War II. He died at the age of 91 in 1965.Sir Winston Churchill first visited the United States as a young man and benefitedf%u00bb 'o m fK n n n n n t n t i o n ftv %u00bb A o %u00bb \\U n rA Oa o w a o n n i J *%u00bb %u2022>**%u2022*- U W U V U p U V I W j k A / U i H C O OUiU>His friendship with President F.D. Roosevelt had a far reaching effect on the course of the War. He was a child of the old and new world and he spoke to Congress on two occasions, Lady Soames said. The library at the Country Day School has a small collection of Winston Churchill memorabilia including a still life picture, %u201cFlowers in a Blue Vase,%u201d painted by Sir Winston Churchill, on loan from an alumnus. Many people consider Sir Winston Churchill to be one of the great statesmen of this century but few know that he painted about 500 canvasses during his lifetime. After the presentation Lady Soames visited 197 Amity Street in Cobble Hill, where her grandmother, Jennie Jerome, was born. The present tenant, Claiborne Ray, an editor at the New York Times, explained that it was only recently that it was discovered that Lady Soames%u2019 grandmother was bom in her home when the Cobble Hill Association was trying to get landmark status. Originally the house was 8 Amity Street before the numbers were reversed. Historians had believed that Jennie Jerome was born at 426 Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights.Oscar Nemon, the sculptor, has done portrait busts and full-length sculptures of many of the most prominent figures in England including Queen Elizabeth and most recently Margaret Thatcher before he died in 1985.The Country Day School is situated on a 25 acre campus with 654 students from 5th grade to 12th grade. The students come from diverse backgrounds from all over Brooklyn but have to pass an examination to enter the school.Family Center Starts Buy A Brick CampaignThe Park Slope Neighborhood Family Center has announced the launching of a %u201cBuy A Brick%u201d campaign to raise the remaining funds needed to open the second floor of the vacant school the group is renovating into a multi-generational community center.%u201cWe are reaching out to the neighborhood to put the final touches on the first phase of our renovation so that the 12th Street Preschool can move in,%u201d says Richard M. Rosan, president of the PSNFC Board of directors. The PSNFC celebrated the halfway mark in its renovation program at a party Sept. 23 at the Berkeley-Carroll Street School. Boardmembers from the agencies that will move into the center, as well as others that helped in the project, attended.Rosan said, %u201cOur version of a center for all ages with services provided by 12th Street Preschool, Park Slope Geriatric Day Center, Project Reach Youth, Children and Youth Development Services, and the Fifth Avenue Committee, and the Gallery Players comes closer to reality every day.
