Warren, son of Bernice Warren of Carlton Ave., has completed the cannon fire direction course under the one station unit training program at Fort Sill, Okla. He was taught to operate and maintain a digital automated computer for field artillery and a cannon fire direction center to compile target lists.On September 29, Mayor Edward Koch hosted the 17th Annual Mayor%u2019s Volunteered Service Awards Ceremony, and honored three downtown area people. Philip Genty, the top winner, works at Bedford Stuyvesant Legal Services. He started the Parents Legal Rights Clinic at the New York City Correctional Institute for Women. Presentations for incarcerated parents are held each week. Dominick Massa of the Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Dev. Corp. and NY Telephone received an honorable mention for the work he%u2019s done helping youth and the disadvantaged in Sunset Park. Jose Suarez of 2nd Street, a John Jay High School student, is a volunteer counselor at the St. Saviour Center for Retarded Children; he received an honorable mention.Bill Edwards has been appointed chairman of the Music and Worship Committee of the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn Heights, he is taking over from Kathy Reno.Lawrence J. Zimmerman, a mathematics teacher at Brooklyn Technical High School in Fort Greene, has been selected to receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics teaching for 1986. The 108 teachers selected, two from every state, district and territory, were chosen on thebasis of classroom performance, student progress and professional endeavors. Each of the home schools of the awardees will receive a $5,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to be spent under the direction of these teachers to supplement current science and mathematics programs.William J. Flynn, president and chief executive officer of Mutual of America, will be the guest of honor on Oct. 28 at the 121st Anniversary Dinner of the Brooklyn Borough of Community Service. Flynn is being honored for his commitment to community service.Jacqueline A. Denny, a senior at St. Ann%u2019s School in Brooklyn Heights, has been selected as a semi-finalist in both the National Merit Scholarship competition, and the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students. Finalists are chosen on the basis of further applications.Peter Lewison, age 24, of Argyle Rd., and Michael Marx, age 27, of 4th St., have been awarded the Southland Olympia Award in recognition of their outstanding fencing successes. Marx is a five-time national champion in the foil, and finished second at the 1985 World University Games in Japan. Lewison was ranked No. 1 in the foil in the U.S. in 1984, and had the best showing by an American in the individual foil at the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles with his llth-place finish.Dr. Yosef P. Krespi, director of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Long Island College Hospital and the regional director of otolaryngology at the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, has received the Honor Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Krespi has been an active member of the Academy for seven years.Spec. 4 Raul Brunet Jr., son of Raul and Ana Brunet of 17th St., has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal in West Germany. The Achievement Medal is awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage and other accomplishments. Brunet is an armor crew member with the 32nd Armor.Brooklyn Philharmonic Names New OfficersThe Brooklyn Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra board of directors has named new officers for the coming year, picking Robert C. Rosenberg as the board%u2019s new president. Stanley H. Kaplan, president for the past term, was named the board%u2019s chairman. Daniel S. Schwartz, former chairman, was named honorary chairman and I. Stanley Kriegel, former vice president, has also become an honorary chairman. Also elected for the coming year was Robert A. Galletta, vice president. Richard V. Campagna, a lawyer and community leader, was elected a member of the board.Rosenberg, the board%u2019s new leader, is president of the Grenadier Realty Corp., one of New York%u2019s largest real estate management firms, and is also general manager of Starrett City in Brooklyn. He joined the Starrett Housing Corporation in 1973 after service as Assistant Administrator for the New York City Housing & Development Administration and as First Deputy Commissioner for the New York HDA Department of Development. He has been a member of the Brooklyn Philharmonic board for seven years.Stanley H. Kaplan, the new Philharmonic chairman, is the president of the Stanley H. Kaplan Educational Center, Ltd., the largest test-preparatory organization in the nation. He has been a member of the board of the Brooklyn Philharmonic since 1970 and its president since 1979, presiding over a period of great growth and expansion for the orchestra. The group%u2019s budget has increased from $200,000 to $1.4 million over the time. In addition, Kaplan was a moving force behind the new acoustic shell in the Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera House, which has been named the Stanley H. Kaplan Education Caiter Acoustic Shell.Dan Schwartz, the new honorary chairman, has been a member of the orchestra%u2019s governing body for over a quarter of a century. Vice president for many years and later executive vice president, he has been its chairman since '1984. Stanley Kriegel has served on the Philharmonic%u2019s board for 27 years.
