^ JAMES MAKE NEWgMann Gets AwardThe Prospect Park Environmental Center (PPEC) presented its first Volunteer of the Year award Oct. 1 to Michael Mann of Flatbush, a civic and environmental activist who founded and leads the Environmental Center%u2019s Explorer%u2019s Post #8.Also receiving awards at the first-ever ceremony for the volunteer corps of PPEC were Claudia Lampart, of East Flatbush, for Most Reliable Volunteer, and Kim Nizum, age 15, of Park Slope, for Youngest Volunteer. The three were feted at the event by some 50 participants who enjoyed a buffet dinner at the Park Slope brownstone of PPEC%u2019s vice chairman, Barbara McTieman.The Prospect Park Environmental Center uses volunteers at its year-round series of bus and boat tours, at street fairs, and for various office and other functions. %u201cWithout volunteers,%u201d said PPEC%u2019s Executive Director John Muir, %u201cwe would have no organization. PPEC was begun in 1979 with a dream and a lot of willing volunteer hands. Over the years, we%u2019ve grown enough to be able to pay a staff, but the volunteers still serve as the %u2018oil%u2019 in keeping the organization running s m o o th ly .%u2019%u2019At the event, PPEC, also presented awards to two of the many Brooklyn experts who lead its various tours. Each received a scroll recognizing them as %u201cOutstanding Brooklyn Tour Guides,%u201d and a fancy walking stick.For information about volunteer activity at the Prospect Park Environmental Center, call 788-8500, or write to the center at The Picnic House, Prospect Park, Brooklyn, 11215.Heights Salon Wins Design Competition AwardAlbert Ciccarelli II, located at 43 Clark Street in Brooklyn Heights, has been presented with a %u201cSpecial Distinction%u201d award in a recent interior design competition conducted by Modem Salon Magazine. Owned by Albert Ciccarelli, the salon topped all entrants in its category and class in the nation-wide contest, which attracted nearly 300 entrants. The owner received a $500 U.S. Savings Bond and engraved plaque. The newsalon, in the one-to-four styling stations category, was rated outstanding by the competition judges, who included David Finkelstein, senior vice president of Glemby International and Ralph Holland of the chain group Holiday Hair.
