Even ascene in which an offending angel has itswings clipped %u2014 the closest Chong comes toportraying an angels%u2019 human qualities %u2014 issuffocated in the serene gracefulness withwhich Chong imbues everything in this production.Swedenborg himself was berated for thissort of thing in the late 18th century by theEnglish poet William Blake, who read andfor a time admired Swedenborg%u2019s work.%u201cSwedenborg,%u201d Blake wrote, %u201chas not written one new truth . . . he has written all theold falsehoods. And now hear the reason:He conversed with Angels who are allreligion, & conversed not with Devils whoall hate religion, for he was incapable thro%u2019his conceited notions.%u201dBlake%u2019s point was that Swedenborg%u2019s visions were inauthentic because they sprangnot from energy and passion (representedby the devils) but from a pale and overactive imagination bound by the fetters oftraditional religious schemes and symbols.So, too, in %u201cThe Angels of Swedenborg,%u201dwe have a work that pays wistful homage toarchaic symbols without the redeemingdevotion inspired by passion.
