A r t s *Soviet Stars Start Shining Season At Brooklyn CollegeBY LINUS GELBER%u201c If you%u2019re talking about artistic comparison, then only one other New York performance program really stands up to us-and that%u2019s the Great Performances series at Lincoln Center,%u201d attests Joel Garrick. %u201cThe quality of our performances is absolutely of the highest calibre.%u201dGarrick is the Program Director at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, a group working independently out of Brooklyn College facilities and buildings and importing a dazzling range of stars and players in a season that, this year at least, will include the historic premiere pcrformancc--ihc first since their defection%u2014of the controversial Leonid Kozlov-Valentina Kozlova dance team, which Bed Soviet domination and the Bolshoi Ballet in September to seek American asylum.%u201c Hmmm, that%u2019s a great story,%u201d muses Garrick. %u201c The mechanic^ of it, pul simply, are that you have to keep your contacts open.%u201d He explained that a group of English dance stars had originally filled the Kozlov dance-calendar space, but that they had cancelled out just days before the pair defected. %u201c 1 was talking to Alex Dube, a fine ballet manager who just happens to speak Russian, and wondering who we could get to fill the slot, and Alex said, half-jokingly, %u2018Hey, why don%u2019t you get the Kozlovs.%u2019 And I said, jokingly, %u2018sure.%u2019 And thus history was made.%u201dThe rest of the season lineup was hardly a diminutive one, either; the collection of classical names performing in the music series this year could almost bring a posthumous smile even to crafty old Bach, and the dancers represent the cream of choreography from Prague, Taiwan, Russia and Spain, as well as roundly showing different schools of American dance. The Brooklyn Center at Brooklyn College dropped its overlong appellation in favor of the simpler and more close-cropped BCBC. %u201c Of course, everyone says, %u2018What%u2019s BCBC?%u201d %u2019 Garrick admists. %u201c But then, twelve years ago everyone was saying, %u2018W hat%u2019s BAM?%u2019 We%u2019re young%u2014but we%u2019re not afraid of being young. We%u2019re doing well. 1 mean, this year we have a performance by Luciano Pavarott i %u2014 Pavarolti who has a wailing list of seven years for shows-and he%u2019s coming here. The growth since 1 got here has been an incredible thing.%u201d Garrick initially came to BCBC two years ago after aseveral-year tenure at Joe Papp%u2019s Public Theatre.Although it is not affiliated with Brooklyn College, the renting of the campus%u2019 2500-seat newly renovated Whitman Hall and smaller, 500-scat Gershwin Theatre as opposed to having to constantly maintain an independent Hall, cuts down BCBC%u2019s operating budget to some S500.000, which is a miniscule budget-line for an operation of its vigor and fervor. The most immediately-felt result of the liny overhead is the tiny ticket price: Garrick is quick to indicate that concert tickets often run as low as $4 individually, and even less in thecontext of season tickets. %u201c Where else can people get to sec the Boston Symphony Orchestra for under eight dollars?%u201d he asks. %u201c And you can go sec a dance performance by -subscription for less than the price of a movie.%u201d Ticket sales, even at their low prices, account for about 66 percent of BCBC%u2019s yearly revenue; another 10 percent comes from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the rest of the bill footed by corporations, agencies and private donations.GALA%u2019S POPULARITYWhile it%u2019s now playing in the ranks with BAM, Garrick feels that perhaps an undue part of BC%u2019BC's developmental years were spent in a shadow cast from Lafayette St. %u201c When we started doing things that were good, and interesting, people immediately assumed that we were BAM,%u201d he said.KOZLOV DANCERS: Leonid Kozlov and Valentina Kozlova will perform with the Maryland Ballet on Oct. 20 at 8pm and Oct. 21 at 2pm.JOFFERY II DANCERS: Nov. 10 at 8pm and Nov. 11 at 2pm.DAVID BAR-ILANN: Grand piano performance with the American Symphony Orchestra, Nov. 17 at 8pm (bought out by subscription).BOHEMIAN STATE FOLK BALLET: touring out of Prague. Jan. 12 at 8pm.PAULINE KONER DANCE CONSORT: Jan. 19 at 8pm, Jan. 20 at 2pm.BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: Seiii Ozwaa conductingAs it grew, BCBC picked up more and more resemblance to its senior sister, offering several distinct program runs and sporting membership and subscriber rolls of comparable size. In fact, BCBC%u2019s four special gala events this year, shows with pianist David Barllann, Renatta Scotlo, who opened last years operatic season at the Met, vaunted violinist Isaac Stern, and the first performance of pianist Eugene List%u2019s \with eight grand pianos and orchestra playing together (%u201c it's a symphony of pianos,%u201d gleams Garrick), have all already been sold out by subscription, even though they are spaced from November through April.%u201c I think BCBC is finding its rightful place as a major art institution,%u201d Garrick smiled. %u201c They're beginning to talk aboutJan. 26 at 8pm.LUIS RIVERA SPANISH DANCE COMPANY: Feb. 16 at 8pm.
