                                    If your brownstone backyard has left you with an urban green thumb, you can ease your bucolic pangs with a true-to-life Country Harvest Fair competition this summer. Although the big event and final judging-the hoedown, as it were-won%u2019t be held until September 15, entry blanks are ready and the deadline for competiting is nearing as the first of August approaches.The fair will judge vegetables in 17 different categories (from Snapbeans and Collards to Eggplants and Chard), review five classes of homemade food and pick additional winners from five special categories, ranging from Longest Carrot to Scariest Scarecrow. And, as per the real thing, there will be music, races, rides and exhibits to sate your non-comestible interests.All entrants must be residents of New York City, and all entries must be grown therein: Contestants are additionallylimited to one shot in each class. Extras and out-of-staters will be displayed, but will not be considered for prizes.The entry deadline for the Harvest Fair competitors is August 1. Eight readings, organized by the Waterways Project, will be spattered by the ocean%u2019s edge in the next months, beginning July 21 at Pier 13 on Staten Island, adjacent to the ferry slip.Small press poets performing their works at 15-minute intervals throughout the day will be bolstered by tables and displays of small press magazines and privately printed books. In true literary spirit, the day will also spawn a small book with selections from the readings, serving as publicity for all parts of the business, poet, publisher and press.The Waterways Project, Small Press Book Fair and Poetry Readings on July 29, noon-6pm, at Pier 13.
