Carey wants to borrow eight hundred million dollars, for which we will have to pay over half a billion dollars in interest. Not one cent should be borrowed until the government takes the one billion dollars in federal trade-in funds. These funds are available for mass transit when Carey drops his useless plan for the Westway Interstate Highway. Then, if he wants to borrow more for transit, we%u2019re willing to listen. What%u2019s more, all of the Westway trade-in money would be used here in the city, while we would get only a third of the bond money.The Fifty Cent Fare In DangerSome of the bonds would be issued by the Triboro Bridge Authority, which will then have to pay twenty five million dollars a year in interest. This money comes out of the annual subsidy which the Authority is required to give the subway system.Get The Priorities StraightWhy is it that highways are always financed out of taxes, but whenever we need money for mass transit capital improvements we are told that we have to borrow. It%u2019s time to change the priorities.
