The project, called the Wallabout-Navy Yard Cooperative Housing Development, needs the money to repair and replace its elevators and boilers, and additionally do considerable repair of unsound roofing and windows.Built in 1941, the Coop used to house military personnel from the Navy Yard before it was reclaimed by the Housing Authority. The new grant, which was kicked off with a tour of the facilities with Congressman Fred Richmond and Councilmember Gerges, is designed to take care of major projects and put the development back on its cooperative feet; thereafter, rents may be restructured so the project will work in the future in the black.%u2014LZGClan Beats Cost Of FoodIf soaring energy costs are leaving less money in your food budget the Department of Consumer Affairs is ready to help with a conference on %u201c How to Beat the High Cost of Food . Zimmerman says that the committee expects to meet with Schwarz at that time and to decide whether or not to support the plans. The committee%u2019s position will be conveyed at the Commission%u2019s Dec. 18th hearing, Zimmerman says. That hearing will be held at 10:30am in the Committee of the Whole Room at Citv Hall.%u2014L.H.
