Reporters' Ups and DownsContinuedhow uespeiaieiy Sonic pai%u2019ciitS in the Heights want those two extra grades, and how desperately the rest of the District doesn%u2019t want to give it to them. People in the Heights can%u2019t understand the hostility towards them because they don%u2019t see how rich and powerful they look to people in other neighborhoods. People who won%u2019t ever in their lives even begin to have the money that it takes to even rent an apartment in the Heights. As a non-Heights District 13 resident, I%u2019ve felt that myself, and it%u2019s only my Phoenix work which has brought me to understand the Heights any better. I%u2019ve come to realize now that it%u2019s not fair to expect people to give something up just because they seem to have lots of other things. Money can%u2019t buy those two grades, only a policy decision can. While 1 see logically that Heights' parents should give Satellite West a try that would make it work, 1 know that arguuiLiuo uuuui .schools always defy logic. 1 oppose the two grades at P.S. 8 myself, but it's because of where I live and my hope that Satellite West will be a chance for my own children. As a reporter, I think that both sides are doing what%u2019s right for them, and I feel sad at the mess it%u2019s causing.Next Year? The new downtown Brooklyn hotel will be the biggest and best story, when all the developers sort themselves out and some plans really take shape. Some smaller projects like storefront and subway station renovations will get going too. What will happen to the LIRR Terminal? It's too close to call, though I'm afraid a vacant lot looks all too likely for the site if the building comes down. More co-ops will come to the Heights. Mixed use may come to Court Street. The mortgage ceiling will rise. And our boomtown will keep booming; its residents will keep following it all in the pages of The Phoenix.P H O E N IX /WANT ADS81 per5-w ord line. 83 minimum..To place an ad,cal! 643-1400 or send to Classified, The Phoenix,395 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn, IN.Y. 11217State Of The AvenueContinuedAilon. No. it%u2019s not. Yes, it is. Isn't Is.Or the people from the Fifth Avenue Committee who fight like hell for three years to stop the Goya Mall from being built, failing to daunt the developer, the politicians, or the government which is going to come through with a $1.2 million grant for construction. Last time 1 spoke with Borough President Howard Golden, he said it looked like Goya is on the rocks. Community protest? Nope. Developer Gerry Genet is just having trouble raising the money. You figure it.Anyway, believe it or not, 1 really like this place. Stuck in there with all the bitching, there%u2019s a lot of spunk, and some good stuff came out of this year: some final calm with the BQE (at least for a while), the Prospect Park Environmental Center, the progress of oodles of plans both for Prospect Park overall and the Columbia Street/Waterfront area, the influx of more money for housing, new project ideas, the BAM Theater Company. I've been here a year, and the place has been a whirlwind. Some deadline days, I can hardly tell my elbow from my moustache for ail the odd directions we move in.TRAUMAS AND REGRFTSTraumas and regrets are also present, lest we forget: heading the list right now is the resignation of Joan White, District Manager of Community Board Six. District Managers everywhere are dropping like flies, but Joan will be a special loss (having done a special job). The schools are hassling with loads of problems, with understaffing and overworking. The YWCA, although it'll be hog-tied before admitting it peaceably, is running a deficit one-fourth the size of its total budget. Local art galleries are having trouble hacking it, what with the focus of art in SoHo. The problems abound. It looks from here like most of the problems will be snowed under right now. though, along with the boons. The cars are inching and the first snowball has flown, and editors and publishers will be arriving soon to break the solitude, and I%u2019ve been more than an hour writing this. Last week I pounded around to Christmas tree lots to get a story and yesterday I was sent out to buy one for our open house. Yesterday, I also went to the auction of parts of the Brooklyn Bridge (no kidding%u2014they got a good deal, too). Taste-testing imported beers in the office last months was also pretty neat (wheeeeee%u2014no, this is research! Honest to God. Mike!), and so are the foibles that fall about us. Somewhere in here it manages to stay fun, though it galls me to own up to it.The first phone call has come, which makes the end of the morning official, and I%u2019d better cool here. It%u2019s snowing more than ever, and probably a good idea to venture to the basement and try to figure out how to stoke the boiler in this place. (How many publishers does it take to screw in a light bulb?...two: one to screw it in and the other to pay the electric bill when it doesn%u2019t go on. I love this place).B row n sion eB rooklyn %u2019sC reativeC hildren %u2019sC lothing StoreGREAT VALUES!209 7th Ave.(at 3rd St.)499-2555Designer Sam ples at 33-50% OffOPEN SUNDAYS THROUGH CHRISTMASUnique StylesHandcrafted***- U M ^ V I I V USpecialty ItemsNoticeAttention Advertisers!Holiday Deadlines*.. ^*Fo r Classified A d s ^ *For all Neighborhood Services.
