A FOURTH OF JULY SALUTE TO LADY LIBERTY ------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Marks Opening Of New MuseumA new exhibit %u2014 one of the cornerstone%u2019s of the Lady%u2019s restoration plan %u2014 will open in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty July 5. The exhibit will be the first permanent display on the history and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty.Among display items are full-scale replicas of the statue%u2019s face and left foot, specially produced scale models, and hundreds of original documents and artifacts, some to be viewed by the public for the first time. Other elements include the old torch and flame replaced during the restoration project, and two murals created by Statue of liberty postcard collector Michael Forster and Brooklyn artist Eugenia Balcells.In addition, the new museum contains letters written by immigrants detailing their emotions when first viewing the Staute of Liberty. Says one, %u201cShe was a beautiful sight after a miserable crossing that September. She held such promise for us all with her arm flung high, the torch lighting the way %u2014 opening a new world to those who would accept the challenge.%u201dThe public%u2019s first chance to view the exhibit will be noon, July 5, when the Circle Line Statue of Liberty Ferry departs once again from Battery Park, South Ferry.Kirsten H udso n Photo1!Tour Of Liberty Weekend CelebrationJULY8am Operation Sail 1986, Part I:More than 250 sailing ships will travel down the East River and under the Verrazano Bridge. Among the ships in the parade will be schooners, barks and fully-rigged sailing ships. It is a precursor to the official review July 4.11:45am Internationa] Naval RevieMore than 35 naval ships from throughout the world will sail up the East River from the Verrazano Bridge to anchor on the Brooklyn and Manhattan waterfronts.8:30pm, Unveiling of Lady Liberty:After two years of restoration work, the Statue of Liberty will be unveiled to the public by President Ronald Reagan. A light show, illuminating the Lady, one section at a time, will precede the lighting of the torch, expected at roughly 10:50pm. The torch lighting will be followed by a brief display of fireworks.JU LY ~ J9:30am, Naval ReviePresident Ronald Reagan will review 35 international naval vessels from his vantage point on the deck of the U.S.S.Iowa. The U.S. Navy flying team, The Blue Angels, will put on an aerial show. 10:30am, Operation Sail, 1986:Sailing ships from more than 30 countries will cruise by Governor%u2019s Island where the President and other dignitaries will review them. Route for Op Sail is past the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River to a point north of the George Washington Bridge, then back down the Hudson to their berths in Lower Manhattan and along the Brooklyn W aterfront for public viewing on July 5 and 6. (See Map)8pm, Music In The Park:John Williams will conduct the Boston Pops Orchestra with a salute to the Statue of Liberty at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. In Brooklyn ships will be at Piers 1 through 12. In Manhattan, they will be at the South Street Seaport Piers 15-17 and at Pier 40, Houston and West Streets.Noon, Statue of Liberty Re-Opens:Circle Line will resume its schedule of ferry service to the Statue of Liberty following a ceremony involving Nancy Reagan at approximately 10am. The American Museum of Immigration in the base of the statue, a feature of the restoration project, will open today. Ferries leave from Battery Park, South Ferry.8pm, Classical Music in Central Park:Zubin Mehta conducts the New York Philharmonic in a salute to liberty, including classical music stars from around the world. On the schedule are Placido Domingo, Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and Marilyn Home.
