A FOURTH OF JULY SALUTE TO LADY LIBERTYHarbor Festival Marks 10th Anniversary With Liberty%u2019s 100th BashJULY 3Midnight: A gun will sound heralding the beginning of Harbor Festival 1986, sponsored by The Port Authority of New York and Jew Jersey. Festival opens at 9am each day and is free.JULY \11:30am: Battle of the Bands begins at the World Trade Center Plaza, continuing until 5pm.Noon: Each of the three Main Stages opens with entertainment. This Land is Our Land features ethnic entertainers from Europe, Africa and Asia to reunite visitors with their ethnic roots. Singing frd Dancing for Liberty is the setting for antic choruses of adults and children ging %u201c Happy Birthday%u201d to the Statue if Liberty in addition to other traditional 9ongs. The 48th National Folk Festival Stage will feature a range of performances from the dancing of the Akwassasne Indians to the Mardi Gras Indians. Cajun music and urban blues will also be featured. Performaces are scheduled each day o f the festival.Noon: Special performances are planned for smaller stages in Battery Park where music and comedy will be on stage, and at Federal Hall, at the head of Broad Street, where high school bands will perform until 6pm.1,3 and 5pm: The Colossal Birthday Party at the U.S. Custom House at Bowling Green celebrates the statue with a huge birthday cake with samples for visitors.8pm: Activities at the Main Stages turn to public dance. At This Land is Our Land, salsa and merenque bands are featured. At Singing and Dancing for Liberty, there will be ballroom dancing. Best viewing sites in Brooklyn: the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Pier 8 on Columbia Street at DeGraw Street, and the closed down Belt-Parkway in Bay Ridge. From Lower Manhattan, Battery Park is an ideal viewing area.%u2018Liberty Overture%u2019 Welcomes The Fourth%u201cLiberty Overture,%u201d composed for amplified orchestra on water by Brooklyn artist Wendy Chambers will be performend July 4th on the Brooklyn V, floating just of shore of Manhattan%u2019s Battery Park. The 20-minute salute will begin at 11:40am.An on-board mobile music system has been installed to amplify the upper deck orchestra of 10 Prophet 2000 synthesizers, percussion quartet, brass quartet and saxophone. The program will open with the playing of the %u201cStar Spangled Banner,%u201d followed by the Overture.The event will culminate at noon with the Grand Boat Salute when 40,000 ships sound their horns, concurrent with a 21-gun salute.Bells Ring For LibertyThe Catholic Archdiocese of New York will celebrate a special mass on Thursday, July 3 at 10:30am at St. Patrick%u2019s Cathedral to herald the beginning of Liberty Weekend. Following the Mass, the cathedral bells will be rung by His Eminence John J. Cardinal O%u2019Connor.
