Government Hopefuls File PetitionsContinued from Page 1file cabinets. Oddly, the candidates themselves rarely file their own petitions. The Board of E lections staff then clocks allthe petitions in, assuring the candidates and those who will later review the signatures for inconsistencies that the names were filed before the deadline. Stemlieb then records the petitions and volume numbers as well as the number of signatures by hand in a large, black folder.Stemlieb says the Conservative Party was the first group to have their petitions filed. At about 5pm on the final filing day, the Kings County Democratic Party carried 35 volumes of signatures into the office. Because many of the candidates wait until the final hours, Stemlieb works around the clock to make sure the numbers and names are in place so that petitions can be reviewed as soon as possible.By Friday, July 11, election lawyers were scanning the names to see if any improper signatures were included. In New York City, an increasingly popular way of winning an election is to have opposition candidates removed from the ballot because of improper petition signatures or cover sheets. The signatures must include a complete name with a middle initial, the individual%u2019s complete address and the name must not appear on any other candidates%u2019 petitions.General objections to the petitions had registered with the Board by midnight, July 14. Other days are set aside for specific objections, and reasons for the objections. Objections are then sent to the borough offices for a follow-up investigation of the irregularities. In order to be place on the Democratic ballot in September, candidates for the Assembly and the District leader/State Committee need 500 valid signatures; for the State Senate, 1000; and for U.S. Representative 1,250. Most of the candidates file three to four times the necessary amount with Stephen Solarz from the 13th Congressional District filing the most, 20,153.The following is a list of DowntownBrooklyn area candidates who filed petitions with the NYC Board of Elections byJuly 10 at midnight.
