Lieutenant Michael Geraghty from the Organized Crime Bureau in Brooklyn says the operation is only a small part of a much larger crack ring yet to be exposed. In the raid on the hotel on July 22 at 4:20pm, police from Brooklyn North Narcotics confiscated 62 vials of crack and a half ounce of loose crack (enough to make approximately 200 vials), three scanners capable of picking up police communications, ten walkie talkies and a 9mm machine pistol. The month long investigation, headed by Geraghty, of the drug sales at the hotel was initiated after the supposed ring leader of the operation, 29-year old Jerome Washington, was arrested on a drug charge early in June. At that time Geraghty says, police came in possession of a notebook that detailed job descriptions for people employed in the drug ring, listed drop off points and the times they were made. Washington, a former security guard at the Arms Hotel, had been living at the hotel with his girlfriend, Kimberly Jerry, and police say he rented rooms from residents in the hotel for upwards of $1000 from which to run the operation. The management, Merco Properties, Inc., cooperated with the investigation, Geraghty says.Police estimate that the group made drug transactions totalling $8,000 to $10,000 on a daily basis in an operation that ran 24-hours a day from several rooms in the hotel. Drop offs and pick ups were made by the half hour.%u201cWhat is incredible is the extremes they went to to avoid detection,%u201d Geraghty says. Security guards employed in the operation would screen customers entering the hotel and by walkie talkie signal the eighth floor operation. %u201cJerome Washington would meet the people on the floor and then radio insidefor them to be aiioweu Lulu Hie rooms for the sale,%u201d Geraghty explains. When the 39-member team raided the operations at the hotel on July 22 they operated on complete radio silence, establishing signals to communicate. Investigators were sent into the building first while an undercover team took over the lobby, removing radios, knocking out the main switchboard and securing the guards on duty. The eighth floor rooms were opened with battering rams.Geraghty estimates that roughly 90 people are involved in the crack ring at various locaWhat is incredible is the extremesthey went to to avoid detection.Guards would screen customersentering the hotel and signal theeighth floor by walkie talkie.tions, but says police have not cracked the operations undertaken at other spots. %u201cWashington was an unwitting aid in our investigation. We had virtually no complaints. This was an independent investigation initiated from the notebook that came in our possession,%u201d he says, adding: %u201cI wouldn%u2019t say we%u2019ve solved the crack problem at the hotel, but this clears out a large distributor.%u201d Arrested in the raid and charged for sale and possession of a controlled substance, crack, were: Alfredrick Brown, 24; Gilbert Wells, 33; Jamie Figueroa, 33; Alvin Fisher, 25, a security guard at the hotel who lived at 1040 Park Place; Dwight Page, 24, from 234 Barnes Street; Jesse Baarlard, 47; Thomas Baarlard, 20; Kyle Baarlard, 18; Kimberly Jerry, 28; Alphonso Clarke, 24, a security guard from 189 Halsey Street and Jonathan Pratt, 27, from 864 E. 30th Street and Jerome Washington, 28.
