But the proceedings were interrupted before they started by Ed Hightower,leader from Green%u2019s 57th A.D., who said hewanted to discuss what he called %u201cplantationpolitics%u201d in Brooklyn. The room was apparently cleared of the Lundine representatives for a discussion of the Vann and Greenproblems ensued.Party officials last week said that Golden,through the County Democratic organization,had offered to inspect, bind and deliver thepetitions of all the party%u2019s incumbents to theBoard of Elections.%u201cI defend Howie Golden this tim e,%u201d saidJoni Yoswein, district leader from the 44thA.D. of Flatbush and Park Slope. %u201cAt othertim es I have not. I felt badly that they did notfile their petitions properly. There have beenother tim es that the county needed a kick inthe pants, but this wasn%u2019t one of them.%u201dYoswein, who assisted State Senator MartyMarkowitz in his campaign last year forborough president against Golden, said shetold Hightower that she had still taken herpetitions to the County Democrats for theirinspection, though she did not trust theorganizational enough to leave them overnight.Despite the advice, Vann maintains thatthe County Democratic organization shouldhave contacted all the elected lawyers and letthem know that a change had been made inthe law. %u201cIt%u2019s unfortunate that the leadershipof this County does not want to cooperate withBlack people,%u201d he said. %u201cKeep in mind, therehas been a constant battle with the Countyorganization. The casewas filed against three candidates who hadfiled for toe Erie County positions of sheriff,comptroller and district attorney, andcharged that toe cover sheets accompanying combined petitions of toe Conservativeslate did not properly %u201cset forth the numberof signatures for each of the candidates.%u201dThe decision rendered by toe Court of Appeals also said that it understated toe totalnumber of signatures: that several sheets ofunrelated petitions were intermingled; thattoe pages were not consecutivelynumbered; and that there were illegiblesignatures.%u201cAlthough the statute permits petitions ofseveral candidates to be joined, each candidates petition is a petition for a separateoffice, and if the joint petition consists ofmore than 10 sheets, toe cover sheet mustset forth the total number of signaturesdesignating the candidate for each officeand toe pages on which they may befound,%u201d states toe Court of Appeals decision. The court referred to an earlier decision, toe Matter of Della Cese vs. Black, inmaking that toe ruling that toe Erie Countypetitions were invalid.The Vann and Green petitions were invalidated in Brooklyn Supreme Court lastweek for exactly this reason.
